AI Resume Tips for Experienced Professionals

If you have been in your industry for 10 or more years, your resume is not the problem. Your positioning is.

Experienced professionals make the same mistake on their resumes: they list what they did instead of what they changed. A list of responsibilities tells a hiring manager what your job description said. A positioning statement tells them what the company looked like before you arrived and what it looked like after.

That is the difference between a resume that gets filed and one that gets called.

AI can help you make that shift — but only if you know how to use it. Most people open a chat window and type: 'Improve my resume.' That prompt produces generic output. The AI does not know your industry, your results, or your positioning problem. You have to give it the raw material.

Here is the approach that works for experienced professionals.

First, pull your last three performance reviews, your most significant project outcomes, and any metrics you can document — revenue generated, costs reduced, teams built, processes improved. Paste that raw material into the chat.

Second, give the AI context: your target role, the industry you are moving into or staying in, and the specific type of company you are targeting. The more specific, the better the output.

Third, ask it to identify the positioning gap — the difference between how your resume currently reads and how it needs to read for your target audience. Then ask it to rewrite your summary and your top three bullet points with that gap in mind.

The result will not be perfect. But it will be directionally correct — and it will show you the positioning angle you were too close to your own experience to see.

Experience is not the obstacle. Positioning is. AI is the fastest way to close that gap.
